A week on your own yacht, with a captain and chef who take care of everything, and 700 islands to pick from.

Most honeymoons are spent in a resort with a few hundred other people. On a crewed yacht you board in Nassau, the crew shows you to your cabin, and by lunchtime you are anchored off a sandbar with nobody else on it. The chef cooks what you like and the captain moves the boat when you feel like moving. The rest is up to you.

We have been arranging crewed charters in the Bahamas since 1998. Tony and Gail King, who founded the company, ran their own charter yacht in the Caribbean before they started booking for other people. We know the boats, the crews and the anchorages firsthand.

Why a yacht instead of a resort

It's just the two of you

The only other people on board are the crew, and a good crew knows when to appear and when to disappear. Dinner is on the aft deck. The beach you swim to is empty.

A chef who cooks for two

Before you fly out you fill in a preference sheet. Allergies, favorites, how you take your coffee, lobster twice if you like. The chef shops and plans around it.

No schedule unless you want one

Sleep in. Stay a second night at an anchorage you like, or skip the town you don’t care about. The captain plans the route around you. Not the reverse.

Where you will go

Almost every Bahamas honeymoon we book runs from Nassau down into the Exumas. It is about 35 nautical miles from Nassau to the top of the chain, a few hours underway. From there the cays run south for over 120 miles with an anchorage every few minutes. The water over the Exuma banks is the color people assume has been edited. It hasn’t. More about the Bahamas.

Nassau to the top of the chain is about 35 nautical miles, a few hours underway. From there the cays run south for over 120 miles. The lighter dotted line is the way back north on days 6 and 7.

A sample seven day route

Day 1. Nassau to Allan's Cay

Board after lunch, cross to the top of the Exumas, and meet the rock iguanas on the beach before dinner.

Day 2. Highbourne Cay and Norman's Cay

Snorkel the wreck of a drug runner’s cargo plane sitting in shallow water, then anchor for the night behind Norman’s.

Day 3. Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park

Warderick Wells is the park headquarters. Fishing has been banned here since 1986, so the reef is as healthy as any in the Bahamas.

Day 4. Staniel Cay

Snorkel Thunderball Grotto at slack tide, meet the swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, and have dinner ashore at the yacht club if you want a night off the boat.

Day 5. Compass Cay and the sandbars

Wade in with the nurse sharks at Compass Cay marina, then spend the afternoon on a sandbar that only exists at low tide.

Day 6. Back north at your pace

Lunch on a sandbar off Norman’s Cay, then a last night at anchor at Highbourne or Allan’s Cay.

Day 7. Back to Nassau

A last morning swim, breakfast underway, and you are alongside in Nassau by early afternoon. Most couples stay a night in Nassau or fly home the next morning.

If you have ten days we can add Harbour Island and its pink sand beach, or Eleuthera, or simply go slower. Tell us what you want from the week and we will build the route with the captain.

One thing we tell every couple. Don’t start from Florida. The Gulf Stream crossing can be rough and you would lose a day each way. Fly to Nassau, about an hour in the air from Fort Lauderdale or Miami, and start your charter rested.

The right yacht for two

Couples sometimes assume they need the smallest boat on our list. Not so. A crewed yacht for two is about cabin size, privacy from the crew and how you want to spend your days, not sleeping capacity.

Sailing catamaran

The most popular choice for the Exumas. The shallow draft gets you onto the banks and right up to the beach, and two hulls mean the boat barely heels. The cockpit and the trampoline give you places to be alone even with the crew on board.

Motor yacht

Faster between anchorages, bigger master cabins, air conditioning throughout. The better choice if you would rather spend the morning in bed and be at the next island by lunch.

Sailing monohull

For couples who actually want to sail. Smaller crews, quieter anchorages, and the captain will usually hand you the helm.

Most crewed yachts carry snorkel gear, paddleboards, a tender and fishing tackle. We check what is on board before we recommend a yacht to you.

The small things we arrange

Tell us it is a honeymoon when you first write to us and we pass it on to the crew. Some of this is part of the charter and some is at cost. We tell you which before you commit.

  • Flowers and champagne in the cabin when you arrive
  • A private dinner set up on a beach by the crew
  • A photographer for an afternoon in Nassau or at Staniel Cay
  • A cake if a birthday or anniversary lands during the week
  • The master cabin, with the other cabins left empty

When to go

The Bahamas work all year, with a few tradeoffs.

December through May

Drier and cooler, in the 70s most days, and this is when most crewed yachts are in the islands. Christmas and New Year carry a holiday premium of 10 to 20 percent on most yachts.

June through November

Warmer, the water is at its best for swimming, and the anchorages are quieter. It is also hurricane season, so we recommend trip cancellation insurance for summer charters.

If your dates fall in winter or spring, six to nine months ahead gives you the best choice of yachts.

How booking works

1
Tell us your dates, your budget and the kind of boat you picture.

A phone call or the form on this page is enough to start.

2
We shortlist three or four yachts that are free on your dates.

Photos, crew profiles and the exact terms for each one.

3
You pick one.

We hold the yacht, send the contract and take the deposit.

4
You fill in the preference sheet and fly to Nassau.

We brief the crew. From the dock on, they handle it.

Our service costs you nothing extra. Charter brokers are paid by the yacht, so the rate we quote is the yacht’s own rate. Gail King sits on the board of the Charter Yacht Brokers Association and chairs its ethics committee, which is the kind of thing that matters when you are handing over a deposit.

Everything about the trip on YES DEAR was fabulous. Andrei worked out an itinerary that included some out of the way spots as well as the more well known stops that we specifically wanted to see.

Do we need any sailing experience?

None. On a crewed charter the captain sails, the chef cooks, and you are guests. If you want to learn, say so. Most captains are happy to teach.

Yes. You charter the whole yacht. The crew have their own quarters and their own way in and out, and the main cabin and the decks are yours.

It depends on the yacht. Most sailing catamarans in the Bahamas are quoted all inclusive, with meals, drinks, fuel and water sports in the rate. Larger motor yachts are usually quoted as a base rate plus an allowance for food, fuel and dockage, and anything unspent comes back to you. A tip for the crew at the end of the week is customary and is not in the rate. We spell out the terms for every yacht we shortlist so there are no surprises.

Fly to Nassau. There are nonstop flights from many major US cities, and the crew will meet you at the marina or arrange a taxi from the airport.

We arrange yacht weddings in South Florida and we are happy to talk through what is possible for a ceremony in the Bahamas.

For a winter or spring honeymoon, six to nine months ahead gives you the best choice of yachts and crews. Last minute is possible, with less choice.
