The British Virgin Islands are said to be “Sailing Paradise” holding all of natures “little secrets” and here at American Yacht, we can certainly attest to that. The BVI, with it’s beautifully kept beaches, amazing underwater life, and perfect anchorages, administers endless fun and adventure!
Two of the most exciting things to do in the BVI are snorkeling and diving! The great thing about snorkeling, is everyone in the family can take part in this adventure. Just grab your mask, snorkel, and you’re ready to see some of the world’s most enchanted underwater life!
Diving takes a little more skill and bravery and of course, certification, but is a perfect way to explore the crystal waters of the British Virgin Islands.
During some Caribbean sailing charters, dive lessons may be available. If interested, inquire with us prior to booking your charter, so we may forward the proper information to you. Non- certified guests who would like to sample the wonderful underwater sea-life can opt to do a “resort” course that allows for a 30 minute dive to a depth of 33 feet or less. Most of the good stuff is in that range anyway. You will need a diving instructor to accompany you on a resort course.
Now, grab your gear as we go through five of BVI’s snorkeling and diving hot spots!
The Bight
Located in Norman Island, the Bight and the caves (see below) is one of the most popular spots for yacht charterers. Taking place as the main anchorage, hundreds of fish, sea fans, brain corals, sponges, wrasse, elk horn and parrot-fish reside and beautify the waters in this secluded and magnificent location.
The Wreck of the RMS Rhone
In 1867 a horrific hurricane sunk the well known Royal Mail Steam Packet Company’s ship, Rhone, just off Salt Island, leaving it as a popular historical dive site. Rhone coasted the waters for a whopping two years before she was laid to rest.
Divers find themselves intrigued by this wreckage due to its eerie sunken history.
You can find yourself discovering new pieces of the ship left behind all while introducing yourself to a new form of life dwelling among the site. She has now become home to many tropical fishes and coral throughout the ocean floor.
The Baths
The Baths reside in Virgin Gorda, which is the second most popular location in the British Virgin Islands. This yachting destination is famous for its grottoes which were formed by an ancient volcanic destruction, causing boulders to disperse among the island.
Located adjacent to The Baths, is Devil’s Bay, which is a white sandy beach awaiting you after your trail and snorkel along the large granite rocks. An assortment of tropical fish have found their home in this magnificent creation, making it a wonderful snorkeling experience.
The Norman Island Caves
Famous for its tales, Norman Island is a fantastic snorkel spot ready for you to uncover its deep underground pirate booty, which is said to be located all throughout the island. If daring, diving is available, but once you have traveled far enough down, it becomes dark enough to be classified as a night dive. We recommend you readily have a flashlight available to thoroughly enjoy the wonders of the caves.
The Indians
The Indians are made up of four rock structures sitting straight up out of the water to a total of about 30 feet. Underwater they run to approximately 40 feet.
Around these rock structures houses a myriad of tropical fish, harmless jelly fish, sea fans, coral, reef fish and more. Your sailing charter would not be complete without snorkeling this destination (in the day time) and see the beautiful colors that lie underneath these waters.
The British Virgin Islands are awaiting you. Come discover the beautiful waters, secrets, and underwater life, by chartering with us today.
