We’d like to add a new twist for visitors to this incredible destination for nature lovers and adventure travelers, since we are focusing on a Galapagos Islands private yacht charter rather than the hotel and day trips and cabin cruises that are organized by most tour operators around the world.
First, the basics: The Galapagos Islands are located 600 miles West of the Republic of Ecuador of which they are a province.
The islands are volcanic in origin and number 18 main islands, 3 smaller ones and a number of rocky outcrops. The whole group of islands is a National Park administered by the Ecuadorean government as well as a UNESCO world Heritage Site.
Why go to the Galapagos:
The Galapagos Islands remain one of the most amazing nature reserves in the world with the highest number of ENDEMIC species, both aquatic, semi-aquatic and land based. i.e. species found nowhere else and that vary from island to island.
When you think “Galapagos”, the first thing that comes to mind are the giant tortoises, but there are hundreds of other wild species of birds, reptiles, and fish that are unique to the islands. It is also famous for hosting the HMS Beagle in 1835 with the then “geologist” Charles Darwin whose later book “The Origin of Species” gave birth to the theory of evolution.
How to get there:
You must first fly to Quito or Guayaquil in Ecuador and then take a local flight with TAME or AEROGAL to either of the islands’ two airports.
Baltra Airport is the most modern and eco-friendly. Private aircraft can also fly into Baltra. Many of our clients take a couple of days at the beginning or at the end of their Galapagos visit to explore Quito which is a beautiful city located high up in the Andes mountains.
Best time of year to visit:
The best time of year is the warm, clear season that is usually between December and May although you can expect the occasional tropical downpour. The “cold season” from June to November is called the Garua or drizzly season. The Galapagos are actually located right on the Equator but the cold Humboldt current that flows Northwards up the coast of South America from Chile and Antarctica causes dense fog and drizzly rain during the colder months.
